Welcome to KIRKBY LONSDALE: a small, vibrant and relatively unspoilt market town situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Flanking the three counties of Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire, the town offers a picturesque base from which to explore the English Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland. Named as one of the Best Places to Live in the UK by the Sunday Times, Kirkby Lonsdale itself is a historic, quaint market town with a fantastic reputation for high quality independent shopping, as well as excellent restaurants, cafés and pubs, and superb accommodation.

Here, you’ll find plenty to see and do, as well as popular landmarks like the 14th century Devil’s Bridge and Ruskin’s View – which inspired a painting by artist JMW Turner in 1822, and poet John Ruskin to declare ‘I do not know in all my country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine.’

📍 Salt Pie Lane

Have you visited this cobblestone street in Kirkby Lonsdale? You may have walked down it - but did you know the story behind its name? ⬇️

It was formerly known as ‘Cattle Market Yard’ as cattle were sold in the adjoining Horse Market. However, after an enterprising resident began to make hot salted mutton pies to sell to the traders, it gained its current name of Salt Pie Lane - which its held since 1911.

As the pies were so salty, a trip to the nearby Green Dragon (today The Snooty Fox) was in order for a drink...which just so happened to be run by a relative of the pie maker! It remains a great place for a drink to this day 🍻
